During the Civil War, Marietta was set ablaze with the start of "The March to the Sea". Sadly, most of downtown Marietta was destroyed. After the South surrendered in April of 1865, the Reconstruction Era began. Marietta grew quickly because of its original development as a rail center. By the turn of the century, Marietta had a new train depot, and became a center of trade and commerce in North Georgia.
Today, Marietta takes great pride in Historic Marietta Square and other noble historical sights. Home to Kennesaw National Battlefield, Kennesaw Mountain, the Confederate Cemetery, and National Cemetery, Marietta offers Cobb County a rich history. The Marietta Square is home to many attractions such as the vintage train depot, the antebellum Kennesaw House, the Gone With the Wind Movie Museum, and many unique restaurants, shops, and beautiful Marietta City Park. There is something for everyone in your family to do with an afternoon visit to the Marietta Square. And it´s just a short drive from Marietta Square to Marietta´s famous Big Chicken!
